The writing counts too 🎨
In GCSE Art, the notes you write beside your work are not just decoration. They are marked, and many students lose marks by leaving them out or writing too little. This module explains what written annotation is, why it is scored, and how to make yours strong.
Words to know 🔑
Four terms run through this topic. Learn them first.
Strong or weak? ⚖️
Not all annotation earns marks. Compare the two.
Match the term 🔗
- Annotation
- AO3
- Specialist vocabulary
- Recording
- Notes written alongside your artwork
- The assessment objective for recording ideas
- The correct art terms, such as tone
- Capturing ideas in pictures and in writing
Is it optional? 🎯
In GCSE Art, written annotation is best described as which of these?
- A scored, required part of your work
- An optional extra you can skip
- Something needed only in the exam
- Just decoration around the work
The biggest trap 🪤
The most common way to lose marks is treating annotation as padding. Strong annotation records a real decision, such as why you changed a colour. Use specialist vocabulary: composition is how things are arranged, tone is how light or dark an area is, texture is how a surface looks or feels, and evaluation is judging what worked.
Match the art word 🔀
- Composition
- Tone
- Texture
- Evaluation
- How things are arranged in the artwork
- How light or dark an area is
- How a surface looks or feels
- Judging what worked and what to improve
What makes it strong? ✅
Which TWO of these make annotation strong? Choose all that apply.
- It explains a decision you made
- It uses specialist art vocabulary
- It repeats what the picture already shows
- It is left out to save time
