Bringing the play to life 🎭
The Crucible is set in the strict Puritan community of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, during a wave of witch-trial accusations. On the page it is only words. To stage it, a director makes DESIGN choices (set, costume, lighting and sound) and guides PERFORMANCE choices (how actors use their voices and bodies). Every choice is a way of conveying meaning to the audience. This module is about making and justifying those choices.
The four design elements 🔑
A designer works with four elements. Learn what each one can show an audience.
Vocal or physical? ⚖️
A performer interprets a character with two kinds of skill.
Match the design element 🔗
- Set
- Costume
- Lighting
- Sound
- The location, period and mood of a scene
- The status of a character and the Puritan context
- Atmosphere, focus and the time of day
- Tension and events happening off stage
Which design element? 🎯

- Sound
- Costume
- Set
- Lighting
Aim for the top 📌
One more performance skill is proxemics: the use of space and distance between performers, which can show power, conflict or isolation. For a top-band Section B answer, link a specific extract to the whole play and always explain the effect a choice has on the audience.
Match the performance skill 🔀
- Pitch
- Pace
- Gesture
- Proxemics
- How high or low the voice is
- How fast or slow the words are spoken
- A movement of the hands to add meaning
- The use of space and distance between performers
Vocal skills ✅
Which TWO of these are VOCAL skills? Choose all that apply.
- Volume
- Tone
- Posture
- Facial expression
