The modern-text essay is the toughest test of memory on the paper: **no extract, no book, no quoted passage** — just a question and everything you can recall. We will build the method on **An Inspector Calls** (the most popular choice), describing it in our own words — the skill works for any modern text.
How the essay works 📋
One **34-mark essay**, and you **choose one of two questions** on your studied post-1914 text. It is **fully closed book** — you build the entire answer from **memory**, ranging across the **whole text**. AO1 (argument + evidence), AO2 (methods) and AO3 (context) all count — and here the context is usually **social or political**, central to the writer's purpose.

Learn key moments, not the whole text 🎯
You can't memorise a whole play evenly — and you don't need to. Learn a **small set of key moments** for each major **theme**. For *An Inspector Calls*: the Inspector's final warning (responsibility), Mr Birling dismissing his workers' pay request (class), Sheila accepting her guilt while her parents refuse (generational divide). A few precise moments unlock most questions.

Argue, don't retell 🧭
The single biggest trap in a closed-book essay is **retelling the plot**. Examiners want an **argument** — a **thesis** you prove. Not "first this happens, then that". Instead: "Priestley uses the Inspector to dismantle the Birlings' selfishness and argue for collective responsibility." Everything you write then supports that line.

Which opening builds a strong ARGUMENT, rather than just summarising the plot?

Range across the whole text 🏗️
With no extract to anchor you, deliberately **range across the whole text**: an early moment, a turning point, the ending. Track how the writer **develops** the idea — how Sheila changes across the play, say, while her father does not. Showing that development across the text is what \"whole-text\" really means.

Context: the writer's purpose 🏛️
For modern texts, context is usually **social or political**, and tied to the **writer\'s purpose**. Priestley, a **socialist**, wrote *An Inspector Calls* in **1945** — as Britain turned toward the welfare state — but set it in **1912**. That gap is deliberate: the audience, who lived through two world wars, sees Mr Birling's confident optimism as dangerously blind. Use context like that: integrated, and revealing purpose.
