Talking about the future

This module teaches the Gujarati words for ambitions, jobs and opportunities. Every word comes with three things: the Gujarati script, a transliteration in brackets to help you say it, and the English meaning. Gujarati is read left to right. You will recognise the words and their meanings here, not type them. (A native speaker should review the script before launch.)

Jobs and professions

Now some words for real jobs people might dream of doing: - દાક્તર (daktar) = doctor - ઇજનેર (ijaner) = engineer - ખેડૂત (khedut) = farmer - સરકારી નોકર (sarkari nokar) = civil servant Read each word left to right, and use the transliteration to practise saying it aloud.

Write about your ambition IN GUJARATI. Write in Gujarati script - the transliteration in brackets is a reading aid only.

• Name the idea: મહત્ત્વાકાંક્ષા (mahattvakanksha - ambition) or તક (tak - an opportunity)
• Name the job with હું ... છું (hu ... chhu - I am ...): હું દાક્તર છું (hu daktar chhu - I am a doctor), or use ઇજનેર (ijaner - engineer) or ખેડૂત (khedut - farmer)
• Name what you want: નોકરી (nokri - a job) or કામ (kaam - work)
• You may add પગાર (pagar - pay), joined with અને (ane - and)

Learn all three Gujarati forms

To master this vocabulary, link every word to all three of its forms: the Gujarati script, the transliteration so you can say it, and the English meaning. Keep the ideas that are easy to confuse clearly apart - a મહત્ત્વાકાંક્ષા (mahattvakanksha), your ambition, versus the real નોકરી (nokri), the job you do for પગાર (pagar), pay. Reading each word left to right, saying it aloud, and testing yourself both ways is what builds real recall.
