Popular music is the music of the charts, the radio and the everyday playlist, and it stretches across many styles such as rock, pop and reggae, as well as fusion styles that blend traditions together. However varied it is, popular music shares a set of features you can learn to spot. Songs are usually built from clear sections such as a verse and a chorus, they lean on short catchy ideas called riffs and hooks, they are carried by a band of guitars, bass, drums and voice, and they are shaped by music technology in the recording studio. This module walks through those features so you can describe a popular song in exam language rather than just saying that you like it.

How technology shapes pop
More than any music before it, popular music is shaped in the recording studio, not just on the stage. Electric instruments and amplification made new sounds and new volumes possible. Multitrack recording lets each part, the drums, the bass, the vocals and more, be recorded separately and then layered and balanced, so a finished track can be built up piece by piece. Effects change and colour the sound, and producers use editing and other studio tools to shape the final result.
