Your specification does something here that the other boards do not. It puts landform FORMATION and coastal MANAGEMENT in the same piece of content and expects you to handle both. Most students treat that as two topics that happen to share a page. Learn the shapes, then learn the sea walls. ⭐⭐ IT IS NOT TWO TOPICS. IT IS ONE FACT ASKED TWICE, AND THE FACT IS WHAT THE CLIFF IS MADE OF. Start with something you may already know: hard rock resists the sea and soft rock does not. That is true, and on its own it is a sentence about shapes. Now follow it further than that. ⭐ A CLIFF OF SOFT, LOOSE MATERIAL, SANDS AND GRAVELS AND CLAYS RATHER THAN SOLID ROCK, DOES NOT JUST WEAR BACK FASTER. IT BEHAVES DIFFERENTLY. Water soaks into it and makes it heavy. Whole sections slide and slump rather than being chipped away. The cliff line retreats, and it retreats as a face that keeps collapsing rather than as a wall being slowly cut. So the landforms are different. That is the formation half, and you have it already. ⚠️⚠️ BUT NOW ASK WHAT THAT SAME FACT DOES TO SOMEBODY TRYING TO DEFEND THE PLACE. A defence on that coast is not holding back water. It is holding back a large amount of moving material that is already unstable and wants to come down. ⭐ DEFENDING SOFT CLIFF IS EXPENSIVE, IT NEEDS MAINTAINING FOREVER, AND WHEN A DEFENCE FAILS THE GROUND BEHIND IT GOES QUICKLY. And there is a second consequence, which you may have met already: the material eroded from a cliff does not vanish. It travels along the coast and builds the beaches further on. ⚠️ STOP THE EROSION IN ONE PLACE AND YOU HAVE ALSO STOPPED SUPPLYING SEDIMENT SOMEWHERE ELSE. ⭐⭐ SO ONE PROPERTY OF THE CLIFF HAS JUST EXPLAINED THE EROSIONAL LANDFORMS, THE DEPOSITIONAL ONES, THE COST OF DEFENDING, AND WHY DEFENDING HERE CAUSES A PROBLEM THERE. That is why this specification asks for both halves together, and it is why an answer that does formation and then does management, with nothing joining them, is doing half the work twice. Carry one question through everything that follows: what is this cliff made of, and what does that cost?
Two kinds of coast, two kinds of problem
The same waves arrive at both. What happens next, and what it would cost to stop it, depend on the material.

Why a soft cliff slumps
After heavy rain, a whole section of a soft cliff slides down in one piece rather than being chipped away at the base. Why does that happen on this kind of coast and not on a hard rock one?
- Water soaks into loose sands and clays and makes the material heavier and weaker, so gravity can move a whole mass of it at once
- Because waves are larger on soft cliff coasts than on hard rock ones
- Because salt water dissolves the clay in the cliff
- Because a notch at the base is the only way any cliff ever retreats

- That the coastline has moved back since the road was built, and something people used is now gone
Two that follow from a soft cliff

- A defence there has to hold back unstable ground as well as the sea, and has to be maintained permanently, which is why the cost argument is harder
- Stopping the erosion also stops supplying sediment to beaches further along the coast
- Soft cliff coasts do not produce landforms at all

Weighing a decision about somebody's home
Management questions on this topic are not asking which engineering is cleverest. They are asking whether a decision can be justified, and the grade nine answers are the ones that treat it as a genuine argument. ⚠️ START BY SAYING WHAT IS ACTUALLY BEHIND THE CLIFF, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE DECISION TURNS ON. A town, a road and a railway is a different question from a field, and the same policy can be right in one place and wrong a few miles away. THEN NAME THE POLICY BY ITS PROPER NAME. ⭐ HOLD THE LINE, MANAGED REALIGNMENT, NO ACTIVE INTERVENTION. Examiners expect those words, and using them accurately is the cheapest set of marks in the topic. THEN GIVE THE COST SIDE PROPERLY. Not just that defences are expensive, but that on loose material they need maintaining forever, and that the sums are usually compared against the value of what is being protected. ⭐⭐ THEN GIVE THE OTHER SIDE ITS STRONGEST FORM, AND THIS IS THE PART THAT SEPARATES THE TOP ANSWERS. NOT DEFENDING IS NOT A NEUTRAL OPTION. IT MEANS PARTICULAR PEOPLE LOSE PARTICULAR HOMES, AND A HOUSE THAT WILL BE LOST BECOMES VERY HARD TO SELL LONG BEFORE THE SEA REACHES IT. THEN THE THIRD PARTY, WHICH ALMOST EVERY ANSWER FORGETS. ⚠️ DEFENDING THIS PLACE AFFECTS THE NEXT PLACE ALONG, BECAUSE THE MATERIAL THAT WOULD HAVE FED ITS BEACHES STAYS PUT. THEN CONCLUDE, AND SAY WHAT WOULD CHANGE YOUR CONCLUSION. ⭐ A CONCLUSION YOU CAN STATE THE CONDITIONS FOR IS A REASONED ONE. ⚠️ THREE HABITS THAT COST MARKS HERE. ⚠️ THE FIRST IS THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES TABLE. Accurate, balanced, and it decides nothing. Say who gains, who loses, and why they cannot all be satisfied. ⚠️ THE SECOND IS TREATING ONE SIDE AS OBVIOUSLY UNREASONABLE. People who want their homes defended are not being foolish, and people who argue that a defence cannot be justified are not being heartless. An answer that cannot state both fairly will not be trusted with a judgement. ⚠️ AND THE THIRD IS REACHING FOR A NUMBER YOU DO NOT HAVE. ⭐ A RATE OF EROSION, A COST, A COUNT OF HOUSES. IF THE QUESTION GAVE YOU FIGURES, USE THEM. IF IT DID NOT, ARGUE FROM THE MATERIAL AND WHAT IS BEHIND THE CLIFF, WHICH IS WORTH MORE AND CANNOT BE WRONG.
Happisburgh, north-east Norfolk
Happisburgh is a village on the north-east coast of Norfolk, and it is the case study this specification expects you to be able to use for both halves of this topic. ⭐ START WITH THE MATERIAL, BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE FOLLOWS FROM IT. THE CLIFFS THERE ARE NOT ROCK IN THE WAY A CHALK HEADLAND IS ROCK. THEY ARE LOOSE SANDS, GRAVELS AND CLAYS. That single fact makes this one of the most rapidly retreating stretches of the English coast. ⭐ THE FORMATION HALF. The sea removes material at the base, and rain soaks into the loose material above, so sections slide and slump as well as being cut away. What you see is a cliff line that keeps collapsing and stepping backwards, with tilted blocks of ground below the scars where they came away. And the material does not disappear. It is carried along the coast and it helps build what lies further on. ⚠️ WHICH MEANS THE EROSION AT HAPPISBURGH IS SOMEBODY ELSE'S SEDIMENT SUPPLY. ⭐ THE MANAGEMENT HALF, AND NOTICE HOW IT IS THE SAME FACT AGAIN. There were defences here. Timber structures, built to take the force out of the waves before they reached the cliff. They aged, they decayed, and they were not fully replaced, and where the protection went the retreat continued. ⚠️ THE ARGUMENT FOR NOT REBUILDING THEM IS REAL AND IT IS NOT CALLOUS. A defence on loose cliff is expensive, needs maintaining permanently, and is judged against the value of what it protects. On a stretch with a village rather than a city, that sum is genuinely hard to make work. And holding the line here would keep sediment out of the system that other beaches need. ⚠️⚠️ AND THE ARGUMENT ON THE OTHER SIDE IS EQUALLY REAL. THE THINGS AT RISK ARE PEOPLE'S HOMES. PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN LOST TO THE SEA HERE, AND PART OF A ROAD HAS GONE. A HOUSE THAT EVERYONE KNOWS WILL BE LOST BECOMES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SELL LONG BEFORE THE SEA ARRIVES, SO THE LOSS BEGINS WELL BEFORE THE CLIFF DOES. Between those two positions sit the policies you should name: holding the line, managed realignment, and no active intervention. Explain formation and management together
Using the North Norfolk coast at Happisburgh, explain how the coastal landforms there have formed AND evaluate how that stretch of coast should be managed. Either conclusion about management can earn full marks if your reasoning supports it.
- Start with what the cliffs are made of, since everything else in the answer follows from it
