A tropical cyclone is a huge spinning storm that forms over warm oceans. Call it a hurricane in the Atlantic, a typhoon in the western Pacific, a cyclone in the Indian Ocean - it is the same beast. How a cyclone builds

Put the stages of tropical-cyclone formation into order.

The wall of water

Of all a cyclone's hazards, the storm surge is usually the deadliest. As the storm nears land, its fierce winds and very low pressure push a mound of seawater ashore, flooding low-lying coasts. Add the cyclone's intense rainfall (river and flash flooding), its high winds (flying debris and collapsed buildings) and landslides on rain-soaked slopes, and four hazards strike at once. Coastal, low-lying and poorer communities suffer the most.

Why the gap?

Same storm, different countries

A tropical cyclone of similar strength hits a developed country and a developing country. Compare their impacts and responses, and explain why the differences come down to development level.

  • Compare the SOCIAL impacts (deaths, injuries, homelessness) directly, not each country in isolation
  • Compare the ECONOMIC impacts, noting absolute damage versus damage relative to wealth

Compare, do not describe

Here is the exam technique that turns knowledge into marks. A weak answer describes the richer country, then describes the poorer country, and stops - that is the trap. A strong answer compares them directly, sentence by sentence, using words like *whereas*, *by contrast* and *in comparison*. And every difference is traced back to the same root: wealth, and the capacity it buys to predict, protect, plan and recover. Make that move your habit, and the whole topic pays out.
