How the writing works 🔤
Chinese is written in **characters** (汉字, hànzì). Each character stands for a **syllable and a meaning**, not a single sound, so there is no alphabet. **Pinyin** uses our letters to show how a character sounds, and the **tone marks** (the accents over the vowels) show which of the tones to use.
