Gender and the tilde 🔤
Every Portuguese noun is **masculine** (with **o**) or **feminine** (with **a**): o dia, a noite. The mark **~** (a tilde) over a vowel makes it **nasal**, as in **manhã** (morning) and **mãe** (mother). It is part of the spelling, so never leave it off.
