A **drought** is a long period when an area gets much **less water than normal** - usually from a spell of below-average rainfall, sometimes lasting months or years. Droughts do not hit everywhere equally. The same dry spell can be a minor inconvenience in one country and a disaster in another. This module covers what **causes** a drought and why some places are more **vulnerable** - then the skill the exam rewards most: **comparing** how a richer and a poorer country cope.

Why some places suffer more 🎯
The same shortfall of rain does not hit two places the same way. A location is **more vulnerable** to drought when: - it already has a **hot, dry climate** with little spare water;\n- many people depend on **rain-fed farming** for food and income;\n- there is little **water-storage infrastructure** (reservoirs, pipes, treatment);\n- demand is **high and rising** from a growing population.\n\nNotice how many of these come down to **money and infrastructure** - which is exactly why development level matters so much.

The grade-9 technique 🌟
Here is what turns a good drought answer into a top one. A weaker answer describes country A in full, then country B in full, and leaves the examiner to spot the differences. A grade-9 answer **compares directly**: "*Whereas* the richer country funded desalination, the poorer country *relied on* international aid." Every sentence sets the two side by side and ties the difference back to **wealth, infrastructure and capacity**. Same drought, opposite outcomes - and your job is to explain exactly why.
