After you are 16

This module builds your Bengali for study after 16: university, apprenticeships and courses, and how you apply for a place. Each Bengali example is shown with a simple way to say it in brackets, then its English meaning: ইউনিভার্সিটি (iunivarsiti) means university. A full sentence looks like this: আমি লেখাপড়া ভালবাসি (ami lekhapora bhalobashi), meaning I love studying.

Study or train

After 16 you can carry on studying or start training for work. Both are good routes, and many words for them are borrowed from English. So কোর্স reads as course and ট্রেনিং as training. Sound them out and the English word appears.

Reading a sentence

Now read a full Bengali sentence, verb last as usual: - আমি ইউনিভার্সিটিতে যাই (ami iunivarsitite jai) = "I go to university". Three parts: আমি (ami, "I"), ইউনিভার্সিটিতে (iunivarsitite, "to university"), then the verb যাই (jai, "I go") at the end.
