The words are about paperwork

Look at the vocabulary this topic gives you before you start learning it, because the list is not what the title suggests. There is a word for an apprentice and one for an apprenticeship. There is a vocational training school, work experience, a careers adviser, an application, a CV and a driving licence. There is a part-time job, a wage, a minimum wage and a verb meaning to earn. And there is a verb meaning to decide. Only a handful of the words are about studying at all. What this topic is really about is the year in which things stop being arranged for you: you apply for things, somebody advises you, you may start earning, and you may end up holding a document that says you are allowed to drive. Learn the words in that shape and they stick, because each one has a job in a real situation rather than a place in a list.

Advice and deciding

Two verbs on this list do more work than any of the nouns, and they are worth learning first because they are what an exam question about this topic will actually ask you to do. One means to decide. The other means to earn. Around them sit the nouns you need to make a real sentence: advice, from a careers adviser; an application; a part-time job; a wage, and the minimum wage. Notice how naturally they combine. You take advice, you decide, you apply, you work part-time, you earn. That is a whole paragraph in five words, and it is a far better way to hold this vocabulary than a list of nouns with no verbs to move them. If you are asked what you are going to do after school, an answer that says you have taken advice and decided will always read better than one that names a route and stops. One more thing is worth having before you write anything: the frame יש לי, meaning I have, and its negative אין לי, meaning I do not have. Your specification lists them as the possession structures, and they are what turn a noun on this list into a sentence. יש לי followed by the word for a part-time job says that you have one; אין לי followed by the word for a driving licence says that you do not have one yet. Nothing else here lets you say so much with so little. One caution on the last of them: the minimum wage is a real term you may meet in a text, but this is a language paper. Use it as a word. You are not being asked about economics.

A plan after sixteen

Here is how the words on this list fit together in a real answer, written in English first so you can see the shape before you build it in Hebrew. At the end of secondary school in Israel students sit the matriculation exams, and a university place normally depends on them. But that is not the only route, and this vocabulary list is careful to say so. There is a vocational training school and a technical college, both of which train you for particular work, and there is an apprenticeship, where you learn a trade while doing it rather than studying it full time. Whichever route you take, the same few things happen. You talk to a careers adviser and you get advice. You send an application with your CV. Perhaps you do some work experience first to find out whether you like the work. Perhaps you take a part-time job and earn a wage while you decide.
