A context is not the same thing as a user, and the marks are in the difference. A product can fit its user perfectly and still fail the place it has to work in.

A context is not a user

Here is a design problem, written the way most candidates write it: "Design a bike rack. The users will be people who ride bikes." Everything in that sentence is true, and it will earn very close to nothing. ⚠️ NOW THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A CONTEXT ATTACHED: "Design a bike rack for the front yard of a rural primary school, used by pupils aged 7 to 11 arriving between 8.30 and 8.50 on weekday mornings." Look at how much that second version has already told you. Small hands and short reach. A rush of twenty bikes in a twenty-minute window and then nothing all day. Outdoors in British weather. On a site where a caretaker has to mow around it and where the cost comes out of money the parents raised. ⚠️ NONE OF THAT CAME FROM THINKING ABOUT THE USER. IT CAME FROM THINKING ABOUT THE PLACE. And that is the distinction this whole topic runs on. Your specification does not ask you to explore a user. It asks you to explore "the context a design solution is intended for", and it lists three things to find there: where and how the product is used, who the primary user and the wider stakeholders are, and what social, cultural, moral and economic factors are at work. ⚠️ SO A PRODUCT CAN FIT ITS USER PERFECTLY AND STILL FAIL ITS CONTEXT. A rack that a child can use beautifully, but which rusts in a month, blocks the fire exit, or costs more than the school can raise, has not solved the problem it was given. The user is one thing IN the context. It is not the context.

  • The whole situation the rack must work in: an exposed rural yard, used in a rush on weekday mornings
  • THE PRIMARY USER, because this is the person who physically uses the product for its purpose
  • A WIDER STAKEHOLDER who maintains it, affected by the design without being the person it is for
  • A WIDER STAKEHOLDER who funds it, whose interest is in what the money buys rather than in using it
  • A CONSTRAINT, because it is a limit the setting imposes that no design can argue with
  • THE DESIGN CONTEXT itself, since it names the whole situation rather than one person or limit within it

It fits the user. Why did it fail

A student designs a bike rack for that primary school. Pupils can use it easily and it looks good. It is rejected because the caretaker cannot get the mower past it and it costs three times what the parent association raised. What does this best show?

  • That meeting the primary user's needs is not enough on its own, because wider stakeholders and the constraints of the setting also decide whether a design works
  • That the student misunderstood what the pupils needed
  • That the design was not attractive enough to justify the cost
  • Nothing useful, since budget and maintenance are not really design problems

Three things to find in any context

Whatever the brief, a context contains these three. Most candidates explore only the first column, which is why the other two are where the marks are.

The habit that moves this topic up a grade

There is one sentence that costs more marks than any other on this part of the course, and it is some version of: "the product will be used by people who need it". ⚠️ IT IS NOT WRONG. IT IS JUST TRUE OF EVERY PRODUCT EVER MADE, WHICH MEANS IT TELLS A MARKER NOTHING ABOUT YOUR THINKING. So use this test on every sentence you write here. COULD THIS SENTENCE BE COPIED, UNCHANGED, INTO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROJECT ABOUT A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PRODUCT? If it could, it is not doing any work. "The user needs it to be safe" passes into any project at all. "The rack must not have parts at eye level for a child of seven" belongs to exactly one. ⚠️ AND THE RELIABLE WAY TO GET THE SECOND KIND IS TO NAME THINGS. Name the place. Name the user group with an age or a role attached. Name the time of day, the season, the number of people. Specifics are not decoration; each one generates a requirement you would not otherwise have found. Then push past the obvious person. ⚠️ ASK WHO ELSE TOUCHES THIS THING ACROSS ITS WHOLE LIFE: who puts it there, who cleans it, who fixes it when it breaks, who pays, who has to live next to it, and who deals with it when it is finished with. Most of those people are invisible until you deliberately go looking, and each one you find is a requirement a weaker answer will miss. One more thing worth knowing about this specification. OCR names no designers and no companies anywhere in its content. Your examples are expected to be your own, so a real context you actually know beats a famous one you half-remember.

Four kinds of pressure on one school yard

Stay with the rural primary school and its bike rack. Your specification asks you to investigate social, cultural, moral and economic factors, which sounds abstract until you put it on a real yard. SOCIAL. What does this thing do to how people behave here? A rack by the gate is overlooked all morning, so bikes are less likely to be interfered with and children are more likely to be allowed to ride in. A rack tucked behind the hall is out of sight and may simply go unused. The same object in two places produces two different outcomes, and that is a social factor. CULTURAL. What is normal here, as opposed to somewhere else? At this school most pupils are driven, a few ride, and there is a long-standing walking bus. A design that assumes a city cycling culture is designing for a place that does not exist. ⚠️ Note that this is a question about the specific setting, not about what people ought to do. MORAL. Who is affected, including people who are not in the room? Some pupils cannot ride a bike, or cannot afford one, and a scheme built entirely around cycling should not leave them with nothing. Someone had to make the materials, and someone will have to deal with the rack when it is scrapped. Moral factors are the ones about consequences that fall on other people. ECONOMIC. What can actually be afforded, and by whom? The parent association raised a fixed amount and there will be no more. A rack costing twice that is not a design, it is a wish. ⚠️ AND THE PRICE OF MAKING IT IS NOT THE WHOLE COST: something that needs repainting every year costs the school money for as long as it stands. ⚠️ NOTICE WHAT ALL FOUR HAVE IN COMMON. NOT ONE OF THEM IS A FACT ABOUT THE CHILD WHO USES THE RACK. They are facts about the place. Which is exactly why you cannot find them by thinking harder about the user, and why this topic asks you to explore a context instead.

  • Name the setting precisely: where it is, what it is like there, and when the product is used
  • Name the primary user group as specifically as you can, with an age or a role attached
  • List everyone else affected across the product's whole life, including those who never use it
  • Identify the social, cultural, moral and economic pressures acting on that setting
  • Turn each of those findings into a requirement or a constraint the design must meet

Three investigations to improve

Three pieces of student work. Each answer has to carry the reasoning, not just the verdict.

  • A context investigation opens: "My product will be used by users who want a product that is easy to use and safe." What is the single most useful change?
  • A student designing a planter for a care home interviews residents thoroughly and no one else. What has the investigation missed?
  • A student notices that their proposed design would only work for people who can grip firmly with both hands. How should this be handled in a context investigation?

Explore a context you actually know

Choose a real place you know well: a room at your school, a local shop, a bus stop, a kitchen. Pick one product used there and explore its context. Do not design anything; just investigate the situation.

  • Name the place precisely, and say where and how the product is used there, including when and how often
  • Name the primary user group as specifically as you can, with an age or a role attached
  • Identify at least three wider stakeholders, including one who never uses the product, and say what each needs from it
  • Give one social, one moral and one economic factor that acts on that particular setting
  • Finish by turning three of your findings into requirements, written so specifically that they could not be copied into a project about a different product
