Families

Every argument about the family is really a disagreement about what the family is for, which is why the same evidence proves opposite things to different sociologists.

What you'll cover

The argument underneath every other argument

This topic looks like five separate things to learn. What families are like. What they do. Who does the washing up. How marriage and divorce have changed. And a set of sociologists who disagree about all of it. ⚠️ THEY ARE NOT FIVE THINGS. THERE IS ONE ARGUMENT RUNNING UNDERNEATH ALL OF THEM, AND EVERY DISPUTE IN THIS TOPIC IS A VERSION OF IT. ⭐⭐ WHAT IS THE FAMILY FOR? Sociologists give genuinely different answers. Some hold that it exists to do particular jobs society needs doing, and that it does them well. Others hold that those same jobs mainly serve the interests of an economic system. Others again hold that they mainly serve men. ⚠️ NOBODY IN THAT ARGUMENT DISPUTES WHAT FAMILIES ACTUALLY DO. THEY DISPUTE WHO IT IS FOR. And once you see that, the rest of the topic stops being a list, because your answer to that one question decides what everything else means.TAKE FAMILY DIVERSITY. If you hold that the family exists to do one particular job, then lots of different family forms look like something going wrong - a job being done less reliably than it used to be. ⭐ IF YOU HOLD THAT IT HAS NO SINGLE FIXED JOB, THEN VARIETY IS SIMPLY VARIETY, AND THERE IS NOTHING TO EXPLAIN AWAY. ⚠️ THE FAMILIES ARE THE SAME FAMILIES. THE READING IS NOT.OR TAKE A RISING DIVORCE RATE. To somebody who thinks the family has essential jobs to do, a rise is evidence that something is failing. To somebody who thinks those jobs served one party better than another, the same rise is evidence that people who were previously trapped can now leave. ⚠️ SAME NUMBER. OPPOSITE CONCLUSIONS. AND NEITHER SIDE IS MISREADING THE STATISTIC. ⭐⭐ WHICH IS WHY THE EVIDENCE NEVER SETTLES THIS TOPIC, AND WHY THAT IS NOT A WEAKNESS IN THE SUBJECT. IT IS WHAT THE SUBJECT IS ABOUT. And it hands you the single most valuable habit for the longer questions here. ⚠️ DO NOT LIST VIEWS. TAKE ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE AND SHOW IT BEING READ TWO WAYS. A list of positions is description and stalls in the middle bands. The same fact read twice, with the prior assumption named each time, is evaluation. One question to carry through everything that follows: what does this person have to believe the family is FOR, in order to say that?

One question, three answers, three readings

Read down a column to follow one position through. Read across a row to see the same evidence being read differently. Every view here belongs to the sociologists who hold it, not to this module.

Tap what this claim actually says

Tap the TWO statements that follow from every disagreement being about what the family is for.

  • The same piece of evidence can support opposite conclusions without either side misreading it
  • What family diversity means depends on what you already believe the family is for
  • Collecting better statistics would eventually settle which perspective is correct
  • Sociologists in this debate disagree mainly about what families actually do

One figure, two conclusions

Two sociologists are given the same evidence that divorce has become more common. One concludes the family is in decline; the other concludes that people are freer. Neither has made a mistake with the figure. How is that possible?

  • They began from different views about what the family is for, and the evidence is being read through that prior view rather than deciding it
  • One of them must be using an out-of-date or unreliable figure
  • One of them is biased and the other is being objective
  • More research would show which of the two conclusions is right

Five terms, defined plainly

Five terms, each defined by what it is. What each one means for the argument is the work of the steps that follow.

Match each claim to what it assumes

  • Someone says the rise in divorce shows the family is in decline
  • Someone says the rise in divorce shows people are less trapped than they were
  • Someone says the family is useful because it produces the next generation of workers
  • Someone says unpaid work at home should be counted as work
  • Someone says the growth of different family forms needs no explaining
  • Assumes the family has particular jobs to do, so an arrangement ending means a job left undone
  • Assumes those jobs did not serve everyone in the household equally, so leaving can be a gain
  • Assumes the family is useful to somebody outside it, and asks who benefits rather than what happens
  • Assumes that what counts as work is itself a question, and that the answer has favoured one party
  • Assumes the family has no single fixed job, so variety is not a departure from anything

Two that follow from the argument underneath

Select the TWO statements that follow from every dispute being about what the family is for.

  • A strong evaluation takes one piece of evidence and shows it being read two ways, rather than listing what each perspective thinks
  • Sociologists who disagree about the family often agree about what families actually do
  • Better and more recent data would eventually show which perspective is correct
  • A good answer avoids all three perspectives and simply describes families as they are

Evaluating without listing

You have already met the perspectives themselves, and what each one is for. ⚠️ THIS IS WHAT TO DO WITH THEM ONCE YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT A PARTICULAR TOPIC, AND IT IS WHERE MOST ANSWERS GO WRONG. ⚠️⚠️ THE COMMONEST STRUCTURE ON THIS PAPER IS A TOUR OF THE PERSPECTIVES. ONE PARAGRAPH EACH, ACCURATE, IN ORDER, ENDING WITH A SENTENCE SAYING ALL THREE HAVE A POINT. It feels thorough, it is usually correct, and it stalls in the middle bands. ⭐⭐ BECAUSE NOTHING IN IT IS AN ARGUMENT. IT IS A CATALOGUE.DO THIS INSTEAD: TAKE ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE AND READ IT TWICE. STATE THE EVIDENCE PLAINLY. A trend, a finding, a change in how households are arranged. READ IT THROUGH THE FIRST POSITION, and name the assumption doing the work. ⚠️ THE WORD THAT EARNS THE MARK IS BECAUSE: this reads as decline BECAUSE the family is being assumed to have particular jobs to do. THEN READ THE SAME EVIDENCE THROUGH A SECOND POSITION, and name its assumption too. ⭐ THEN SAY WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRUE FOR EACH READING TO BE THE BETTER ONE. That is the sentence that separates a good answer from a very good one, and it is nearly always missing. FINISH WITH A JUDGEMENT YOU HAVE ACTUALLY EARNED. ⚠️ YOU ARE NOT MARKED ON WHICH SIDE YOU COME DOWN ON. YOU ARE MARKED ON WHETHER THE REASONING GOT YOU THERE. ⚠️ THREE HABITS THAT COST MARKS ON THIS TOPIC IN PARTICULAR. ⚠️ THE FIRST IS TREATING ONE ARRANGEMENT AS NORMAL AND THE REST AS DEPARTURES FROM IT. That is itself a position, held by some sociologists and disputed by others, so stating it as background rather than as a view will be marked as a lapse. ⚠️ THE SECOND IS REACHING FOR A FIGURE YOU DO NOT HAVE. A divorce rate, a percentage of households, a year a law changed: if you are not certain, describe the direction of the trend instead. "Has become more common than it was" is safe and creditable; a confident wrong number is neither. ⚠️ AND THE THIRD IS WRITING ABOUT FAMILIES AS THOUGH NOBODY READING IS IN ONE. Describe forms and arrangements; attribute every judgement about them to whoever makes it.

One change, read three ways

Here is a change nobody disputes: more couples now live together without marrying than was the case several decades ago, and this has become an ordinary way to begin a household rather than an unusual one. ⚠️ THAT SENTENCE CONTAINS NO OPINION. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THREE DIFFERENT ASSUMPTIONS ARE APPLIED TO IT. THE FIRST READING TREATS THE FAMILY AS HAVING PARTICULAR JOBS TO DO - raising children, and giving adults a stable base. From there, a formal commitment looks like part of the machinery: it makes the arrangement harder to leave, and so more reliable for the people depending on it.SO SOCIOLOGISTS WHO START HERE TEND TO READ THE CHANGE AS A LOOSENING, AND TO ASK WHETHER THE JOBS ARE STILL BEING DONE AS DEPENDABLY. ⚠️ NOTE THAT THE CONCERN IS NOT ABOUT THE COUPLES. IT IS ABOUT THE FUNCTION. THE SECOND READING ASKS WHO THE ARRANGEMENT WAS USEFUL TO. If the household's main value to the wider economy is that it raises the next generation of workers and absorbs the strains of working life, then whether the adults signed anything is beside the point.SO SOCIOLOGISTS WHO START HERE TEND TO READ THE CHANGE AS UNREMARKABLE: THE USEFUL WORK CARRIES ON IN A NEW SHAPE, AND NOTHING THAT MATTERS TO THEIR ANALYSIS HAS ALTERED. THE THIRD READING ASKS WHOSE INTERESTS THE OLD ARRANGEMENT SERVED. If a formal tie was historically harder for one partner to leave than the other, and if the unpaid work inside the household fell unequally, then an arrangement that is easier to leave changes the balance of power within it.SO SOCIOLOGISTS WHO START HERE TEND TO READ THE CHANGE AS A GAIN IN FREEDOM, while many of them add that the unpaid work itself has not been redistributed nearly as much. ⚠️⚠️ THREE READINGS. ONE CHANGE. NO DISAGREEMENT ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING. ⭐⭐ AND NOW THE MOVE THAT SEPARATES A GOOD ANSWER FROM A VERY GOOD ONE: SAY WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRUE FOR EACH READING TO BE THE BETTER ONE. The first is stronger if households that are easier to leave do turn out less stable for the people depending on them. The second is stronger if the day-to-day work of the household really does continue unchanged. The third is stronger if the people with least power in the older arrangement are the ones who have gained most.THOSE ARE QUESTIONS THAT EVIDENCE COULD ACTUALLY ADDRESS, WHICH IS WHY NAMING THEM IS WORTH SO MUCH. THE ARGUMENT AS A WHOLE CANNOT BE SETTLED BY DATA. THE INDIVIDUAL CLAIMS INSIDE IT SOMETIMES CAN.

Order how an evaluation is built

Put these six moves into the order that turns a tour of the perspectives into an argument.

  • State the piece of evidence plainly, without interpreting it yet
  • Read it through one position, naming the assumption doing the work
  • Read the same evidence through a second position, naming its assumption too
  • Say what would have to be true for each reading to be the better one
  • Say which of those things the available evidence actually speaks to
  • Give a judgement that follows from the reasoning rather than from preference

Build the sentence that names the assumption

The difference between a catalogue and an argument is one clause. Assemble it.

The families run

Five questions on reading the same evidence two ways. Three lives.

Complete the families facts

The range of different family forms present in a society is _____. Living together as a couple without being married is _____. A family formed when partners bring children from previous relationships together is a _____. Something whose meaning comes from how a society treats it rather than from nature is a _____.

family diversity cohabitation reconstituted family social construct conjugal roles nuclear family extended family household

Three answers to lift

Three student answers on the family. In each case the sociology is accurate and the reasoning is what needs work.

  • An answer gives one accurate paragraph on each of three perspectives, in order, and concludes that all three have something to offer. Why does it not reach the top bands?
  • A student opens by writing that the normal family is two parents and their children, and that other forms are variations on it. They intend this as neutral background. What needs changing?
  • An answer says that more research would eventually show which view of the family is correct. How would you respond?

Read one change two ways

Choose one change in family life that you can describe without needing figures. Explain how two different sociological positions would read it, and reach a judgement of your own.

  • State the change plainly first, in words rather than statistics, and without interpreting it
  • Read it through one position, naming the assumption about what the family is for that does the work
  • Read the same change through a second position, naming its assumption too
  • Explain why both readings can be reasonable without either side misreading the evidence
  • Say what would have to be true for each reading to be the better one, and which of those things evidence could actually address
  • Finish with a judgement that follows from your reasoning, attributing every evaluative claim to whoever holds it rather than stating it as fact
