You already know HOW a gene is moved into a crop or a bacterium. The harder question is whether we SHOULD. Genetic modification splits opinion, and exam questions on it are marked on whether you can argue both sides properly. This module builds that skill.
The case for GM 👍
Supporters point to real, measurable gains: • **Higher yields**, so more food from the same land. • Crops **resistant to pests, disease or drought**, which can mean **fewer pesticides** sprayed. • **Added nutrients**: golden rice carries **vitamin A** to help prevent deficiency blindness. • **Cheaper, purer medicines**: engineered bacteria make **human insulin** in bulk.
The concerns 👎
Critics raise objections that are just as concrete: • Modified genes could **spread to wild relatives**, affecting **biodiversity**. • GM crops may affect **insects and food webs**, including species that were never the target. • **Long-term health effects** of eating GM food are not yet fully known. • Some object on **ethical** grounds to modifying living things. • GM seed is often **patented and expensive**, so farmers must keep re-buying it.

How to structure it 📐
A reliable structure for an evaluation answer: 1. **One benefit**, with a specific example (golden rice and vitamin A, or insulin). 2. **One risk or concern**, with a specific example (gene flow to wild relatives, patented seed). 3. **Your conclusion**, and the reason you reached it. Specific examples are what separate a strong answer from a vague one.
