Helping a performer improve
A coach helps a learner in two ways. Before and during a skill they give guidance to show how it is done, and after the attempt they give feedback about how it went. This module covers the four types of guidance, the types of feedback, and which suit a beginner and which suit a top performer.
Coaching words to know
Learn these before you sort the types.
Guidance against feedback
The two are often muddled, so keep them apart.
Before or after?
In the exam, first ask when it happens. If it is given before or during to help the performer, it is guidance; if it is given after, about how they did, it is feedback. Then name the exact type. Beginners suit visual and manual guidance with positive extrinsic feedback, while elite performers can use verbal guidance and their own intrinsic feedback.
Match the guidance type
- visual guidance
- verbal guidance
- manual guidance
- mechanical guidance
- a demonstration or video to watch
- spoken instructions to listen to
- the coach moving the body through it
- using equipment or an aid to help
Match the feedback type
- positive feedback
- negative feedback
- knowledge of results
- knowledge of performance
- praise for what was done well
- pointing out what to correct
- the outcome, such as the score
- how good the technique was
Guidance or feedback?
A coach shows a video of the correct technique before the learner tries. Is this guidance or feedback?
- Guidance, because it is given before to show how to do it.
- Feedback, because it is about the performance.
- They are the same thing.
- Neither, a video is not coaching.
Best for a beginner
Select the TWO that usually suit a beginner best.
- Visual guidance, such as a demonstration
- Positive feedback to build confidence
- Relying only on their own intrinsic feedback
- Long verbal-only instructions
Count the guidance left
There are 4 types of guidance a coach can use. In one lesson a coach uses 2 of them. Subtract to find how many types of guidance were not used. What is the answer?
Order the coaching moment
Put the coaching of a skill in order, earliest first.
- Give guidance to show the skill
- The performer tries the skill
- Watch how it goes
- Give feedback on how it went
Complete the summary
Help given before or during a skill to show how to do it is called _____, and it can be visual, verbal, manual or _____. Information given after about how it went is called _____. A performer who judges their own attempt from within uses _____ feedback.
