Why each leap happened

New film technology rarely arrives for its own sake. Each leap answered a need, and knowing the reason helps you remember the order. Recorded speech made films feel more lifelike. Full colour and, later, wider pictures made the cinema a richer place to be. In the 1950s, when television began keeping people at home, studios pushed wide pictures and a wave of depth effects to offer something a small home set could not. Lighter cameras in the 1970s freed the camera to move. From the 1990s, computers let film-makers build what no camera could ever film, and soon digital cameras and projection replaced the reels of film themselves. Cheaper, freer, and able to show the impossible: those are the pressures that drove the whole timeline.
