Tatil

Holidays are one of the topics you will be asked to talk and write about: where you go, how you get there, and what you do. English uses one word, "holiday", for two different things. Turkish keeps them apart: a bayram is a festival or public holiday, while a tatil is a holiday you take, the school break or a trip away. This module is about tatil.

Endings, not little words

Where English puts a word in front ("to the sea"), Turkish glues an ending on the back of the noun. You have already met one: okula gitmek, to go to school. • deniz + e = denize, to the sea • dağ + a = dağa, to the mountain • otel + de = otelde, at the hotel Which ending you use depends on the vowels in the word. Front vowels (e, i, ö, ü) take -e and -de; back vowels (a, ı, o, u) take -a and -da. That is why it is denize but dağa.

Holiday words fall into two groups. Sorting them this way makes them easier to recall, and adds three more: ada, an island, plaj, the beach, and otobüs, the bus.

Turkish closes the sentence with the verb

You have practised the endings on their own. Here they are doing their job inside a sentence, with the verb at the end: - Yazın denize gidiyorum = "in the summer I go to the sea". deniz takes -e because it is where you are going to, exactly as you practised. gidiyorum closes the sentence. - Otelde bavul var = "there is a suitcase in the hotel". otel takes -de because it is where something is, not where it is going. That -e against -de contrast is the one to keep straight.
