What you'll cover

Health and wellbeing in Spanish

This module practises the Spanish you need for lifestyle and wellbeing: the vocabulary, the accents and ñ, and useful grammar for giving advice and describing your routine. Spelling counts: a missing accent is a spelling error in the exam.

Key vocabulary

Learn these words with their spelling:

Match each Spanish word to its English meaning

  • la salud
  • la comida
  • el agua
  • el estrés
  • health
  • food
  • water
  • stress

The Spanish word for healthy

Which Spanish word means 'healthy'?

  • sano
  • cansado
  • feliz
  • enfermo

Accents and ñ matter

Spanish uses accents (á, é, í, ó, ú) and the letter ñ. They are part of the word: el estrés (stress) has an accent, and España (Spain) and el año (year) use ñ. Questions open with ¿ and exclamations with ¡. Leaving out an accent can count as a spelling mistake, so learn them with each word.

Complete the advice

Para la _____, hay que comer _____, beber mucha _____ y dormir bien. Hacer _____ es importante.

salud sano agua ejercicio estrés dulces café televisión

Healthy choices

Select the TWO healthy-lifestyle choices, in Spanish.

  • Hacer deporte regularmente
  • Beber mucha agua
  • Comer muchos dulces
  • Acostarse muy tarde todas las noches

Match each reflexive verb to its meaning

  • relajarse
  • acostarse
  • levantarse
  • ducharse
  • to relax
  • to go to bed
  • to get up
  • to shower

Giving advice

To give advice in Spanish, use deber (should) and tener que (have to) with the infinitive. For example: debes comer sano (you should eat healthily); tienes que hacer ejercicio (you have to exercise).

Build the sentence

Put the Spanish words in order to make: 'You have to eat healthily.'

  • Tienes
  • que
  • comer
  • sano

Complete the comparison

Complete: 'La fruta es ___ sana que los caramelos.' (Fruit is healthier than sweets.)

  • más
  • menos
  • muy
  • tan

Describe a routine

Por la noche, debes _____ y _____ temprano. Por la mañana, debes _____ temprano. No debes tener mucho _____.

relajarte acostarte levantarte estrés trabajar comer gritar hambre

Choose the best Spanish

Choose the best Spanish for each wellbeing situation.

  • A friend asks how to stay healthy. You advise:
  • You want to say fruit is healthier than crisps:
  • You describe your routine: 'I relax in the evening.'

Write about your lifestyle

Escribe unas frases sobre tu estilo de vida y tu salud. (Write a few sentences in Spanish about your lifestyle and health.)

  • Use 'debes' or 'tienes que' to give advice
  • Use a comparative (más ... que)
  • Describe your routine with a reflexive verb (me relajo...)
