What leisure and tourism mean
This subject begins with two ideas. Leisure is the activities people do for enjoyment in their spare time, and those activities can be sorted in several ways: active or passive, indoor or outdoor, water-based, home-based, or away from home. Tourism is travelling to and staying outside the usual environment for up to a year, with the intention of returning home. A useful line runs through the middle of it: a visitor is anyone who goes to a place away from home, but a tourist is a visitor who stays at least one night. Tourism itself comes in three types, depending on which way people cross a border, and people take part for many different reasons. This module covers the concepts, the ways leisure is classified, the types of tourism, and the reasons and factors behind the choices people make.

Every tourist is a visitor, but not every visitor is a tourist.
How to place any example
To sort any leisure or tourism example, ask a few quick questions rather than guessing. For a leisure activity, ask whether the person is taking part or only watching, and whether it happens at home, indoors or outdoors. For a trip, ask two things: does the person stay away for a night, which decides whether they count as a tourist, and which way are they crossing a border, which decides the type of tourism. Work through those questions in order and you can place any example with confidence, instead of judging it from the activity alone.
