Your turn to write

In the exam you write a short informal response about media and technology - to a German-speaking friend, not a teacher. This module builds that skill. The golden rule of an informal answer: write to "du", keep it relaxed, and always back up an opinion with a reason - weil (because). And remember the German twist: after weil, the verb jumps to the end of the clause.

Informal or formal?

An open-response to a friend is informal. In German the register shows in one word: du for a friend, or Sie for someone formal.

Which is informal?

You are writing to a German friend. Which is the correct informal way to ask "do you like online games?"

Say what you usually do

Most of an informal answer is about your habits, so you write in the present tense.\n\nRegular verbs follow one pattern: ich spiele (I play), du spielst (you play), wir spielen (we play), ihr spielt (you all play). Learn the endings -e, -st, -en, -t. And to give a reason, add weil - but send the verb to the end: "Ich spiele gern, weil es Spaß macht."

Present-tense endings

Videospiele sind toll: ich _____ jeden Tag, du _____ manchmal, wir _____ zusammen, und ihr _____ am Wochenende.

Two German tricks

Two verb types make your German look advanced. Separable verbs split up: fernsehen (to watch TV) becomes "ich sehe abends fern", and herunterladen becomes "ich lade ein Lied herunter" - the prefix jumps to the end. Reflexive verbs need a little extra word: sich unterhalten (to chat) becomes "ich unterhalte mich mit Freunden online". Use one of each and your writing climbs a grade.

What makes a strong answer?

Select the TWO things that lift an informal open-response to a higher mark.

• Giving an opinion AND a reason with weil (verb to the end)
• Using connectives like und, aber and auch to join ideas
• Writing some sentences in English to be safe
• Using "Sie" to sound polite to your friend
