What you'll cover

Your studies in Bengali

To talk about school and studies in Bengali, you need the vocabulary for teachers, subjects and school life. Each word is written in the Bengali script, with its sound in brackets and its English meaning beside it, so you learn to read it and say it at the same time.

Words for school

Learn four core school words in the Bengali script, with sound and meaning:

People or subjects?

It helps to sort the school words into people and the things you study.

Match the Bengali to the English

  • টিচার (tichar)
  • বিষয় (bishoy)
  • অঙ্ক (onko)
  • বিদেশী ভাষা (bideshi bhasha)
  • A teacher
  • A school subject
  • Mathematics
  • A foreign language

The Bengali word for Mathematics

Which Bengali word means Mathematics?

  • অঙ্ক (onko)
  • বিষয় (bishoy)
  • টিচার (tichar)
  • বিদেশী ভাষা (bideshi bhasha)

More school words

A few more words help you talk about school. To teach is শেখানো (shekhano), and to pass an exam is পরীক্ষায় পাস করা (porikkhay pash kora). A clever student is চালাক (chalak), an answer is উত্তর (uttor), and when you leave you get a স্কুল ছাড়ার সার্টিফিকেট (skul charar sartifiket).

Match the Bengali to the English

  • হেড টিচার (hed tichar)
  • শেখানো (shekhano)
  • পরীক্ষায় পাস করা (porikkhay pash kora)
  • চালাক (chalak)
  • A headteacher
  • To teach
  • To pass an exam
  • Clever

Which are people?

Select the TWO words that are people at school.

  • হেড টিচার (hed tichar)
  • টিচার (tichar)
  • বিষয় (bishoy)
  • অঙ্ক (onko)

Bengali needs no word for is

Words on their own are not sentences. Bengali puts the verb last, and for "is" it often uses no verb at all. Two patterns carry most of what you need here: - আমার টিচার চালাক (amar tichar chalak) = "my teacher is clever". There is no word for "is" - আমার (amar) means "my", then the person, then what they are like. - আমি অঙ্ক পড়ি (ami onko pori) = "I study Maths". আমি (ami) means "I", the subject comes next, and the verb পড়ি (pori, "I study") comes last.

Which sentence means "I study a foreign language"?

Which sentence means "I study a foreign language"?

  • আমি বিদেশী ভাষা পড়ি (ami bideshi bhasha pori)
  • আমি পড়ি বিদেশী ভাষা (ami pori bideshi bhasha)
  • আমি অঙ্ক পড়ি (ami onko pori)
  • আমার বিদেশী ভাষা চালাক (amar bideshi bhasha chalak)

A day of study

Put these steps of studying in order.

  • Study a subject: বিষয় (bishoy)
  • Answer the questions: উত্তর (uttor)
  • Pass the exam: পরীক্ষায় পাস করা (porikkhay pash kora)

Your turn: write in Bengali

Write about your studies IN BENGALI, using the two patterns from this module. Write in Bengali script - the transliteration in brackets is a reading aid only.

  • Say what you study with the verb-last pattern: আমি অঙ্ক পড়ি (ami onko pori - I study Maths), or swap in বিদেশী ভাষা (bideshi bhasha - a foreign language)
  • Describe a person with the zero-verb pattern - Bengali needs no word for "is": আমার টিচার চালাক (amar tichar chalak - my teacher is clever)
  • Name who teaches you: টিচার (tichar - a teacher) or হেড টিচার (hed tichar - a head teacher)
  • You may name the goal: পরীক্ষায় পাস করা (porikkhay pas kora - to pass an exam)
