Keeping the lights on is a balancing act. Every energy resource has a price — in money, in reliability, or in damage to the planet. There is no perfect option, so engineers and governments must weigh the trade-offs. In this module you will learn to do the same.

Renewable vs non-renewable 🔋

Energy resources split into two groups: • **Renewable** — replenished as fast as we use them, so they never run out: **solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, wave, geothermal** and **bio-fuel**. • **Non-renewable** — finite, so they will run out: the **fossil fuels** (**coal, oil, gas**) and **nuclear fuel**.

What is it all for? 🏭

We draw on these resources for three main jobs: • **Generating electricity** (power stations) • **Transport** (petrol and diesel for cars, kerosene for planes) • **Heating** (gas boilers, electric heaters) Transport and heating still lean heavily on fossil fuels, which is why switching them to cleaner resources is such a challenge.

No free lunch ⚖️

Choosing a resource means weighing three things against each other: • **Reliability** — is the power there whenever we need it? • **Environmental cost** — greenhouse gases, waste, habitat damage? • **Economics and practicality** — build cost, running cost, suitable locations? A good answer names a **specific** strength AND a **specific** weakness for each resource — never a one-sided list.
