What you'll cover

Filling a vacancy 🧑‍💼

When a business grows, or a worker leaves, it has a **vacancy** to fill. **Recruitment** is how a business finds and chooses the right person for a job. Get it right and the new worker fits the role and the team. Get it wrong and the business wastes time and money. This module is about doing it well.

Who does what 🗂️

A business recruits for jobs at different levels:

Two places to look ⚖️

A business can fill a vacancy from inside or from outside.

Match each role 🔗

  • Director
  • Senior manager
  • Supervisor
  • Support staff
  • Sets the overall direction and strategy
  • Runs a department and makes big decisions
  • Leads a team and its day-to-day work
  • Helps others do their jobs, such as admin or IT

The recruitment documents 📄

Before advertising, a business writes two documents. A **job description** lists the duties and tasks of the role. A **person specification** lists the skills, qualities and experience the ideal person needs. Candidates reply with an **application form**, filled in for that job, or a **CV**, a summary they write of their own experience and skills.

Recruiting from within ✅

Select the TWO benefits of recruiting internally, from within the business.

  • It is usually cheaper and faster
  • The business already knows the person and their work
  • It always brings in fresh ideas from outside
  • It gives the widest possible choice of people
