Questioning the old masters
For over a thousand years doctors had trusted the ancient writers, above all Galen, without question. In the Renaissance, a new spirit of enquiry led a few bold thinkers to test those ideas for themselves through dissection and observation. This module looks at three who challenged the old authority and at why so many people still resisted the change.

In the exam, tie each thinker to the field they changed: Vesalius to anatomy, Harvey to how the body works, Pare to surgery. Then explain why change was still slow, giving a real reason such as religious objection or the interests of established doctors. Remember that new knowledge came long before new cures.
