A river is a system that shapes the land

A river is not just moving water; it is the heart of a DRAINAGE BASIN, an open system that takes water in, moves it, and lets it out, shaping the land as it goes. ⭐⭐ The basin works as a SYSTEM. Water comes IN as precipitation, is STORED for a while (in the soil, in lakes, in plants), is TRANSFERRED through the ground and along the channel, and leaves as OUTPUT through the river mouth and by evaporation. When input is far greater than output, the river can flood.As it flows, the river does three jobs. It ERODES, wearing away rock and bank; it TRANSPORTS the loosened material downstream; and it DEPOSITS that material when it loses energy. Weathering also breaks rock in place, ready to be moved. ⭐⭐ These processes carve LANDFORMS. Upstream, fast, steep water erodes to make waterfalls and gorges. Downstream, slower water deposits to make meanders, oxbow lakes and floodplains. This module is the whole rivers topic. Writing a strong river answer

The best answers name the process, say WHERE in the basin it acts, and link it to the landform or outcome. ⭐⭐ CONNECT PROCESS TO PLACE TO LANDFORM. Do not just name a meander; say that on the outer bend the faster water erodes while on the inner bend the slower water deposits, which is why the meander shifts. Say whether you are in the fast, steep upper course, where erosion cuts waterfalls and gorges, or the gentle lower course, where deposition builds meanders and floodplains. Carrying the shopping home

Leave the river aside for a moment. Picture walking home from the shops with far too many heavy bags in your arms. ⭐ At the start you are fresh and full of energy, so you manage to lift and carry everything at once, the heavy tins and bottles included. Energy in your arms lets you hold a big, heavy load. ⭐⭐ As the walk goes on you tire, and your energy drops. The first things you set down on a wall to rest are the HEAVIEST, the tins and bottles; the light bread and crisps you keep in hand longest. By the time you reach the door, only the lightest things are still with you, and the heavy items have been left behind at points along the way. So how much you can carry depends on your energy, and when your energy falls you drop the heaviest things FIRST, in order of weight. ⚠️ Hold that picture. A river does exactly this: when it has plenty of energy it carries a heavy load, and as its energy drops it drops the heaviest material first and the finest last, sorting what it leaves behind.
