How the script works

Two things about the Gujarati script. First, it is written left to right and has no capital letters. Second, it is an abugida: each consonant carries a built-in "a" sound, and small marks called matras change the vowel. Unlike Hindi's Devanagari, Gujarati has no top line joining the letters. For example, શ is said "sha".

Putting it together

Now you can talk about a whole school day. At school (શાળા) you sit in a lesson (પાઠ), you might do sport (રમત) or music (સંગીત), and there may be an exam (પરીક્ષા). There are also school trips (પ્રવાસ) and the library (પુસ્તકાલય), and at home there is always the homework (ઘરકામ).

Gujarati puts is at the end

The school words become sentences once you add છે (chhe - is) at the end, where English would not put it: - પુસ્તકાલય શાળાની પાસે છે = "the library is near the school". પાસે (pase - near) follows શાળા rather than coming before it, and the -ની on શાળાની is what links the two. છે closes the sentence. - મને રમત ગમે છે = "I like sport". Literally "to me sport is pleasing". મને (mane) is "to me", and છે closes this one as well.
