Modern products use materials that do more than just sit there. Some **change on demand**, some are **stronger combined** than alone, and some are **woven for one exact job**. They fall into three families - **smart materials**, **composites** and **technical textiles** - and the single most common exam mistake is mixing them up. This tour keeps them firmly apart, because telling them apart is exactly what the marks are for.

Here is the distinction the examiner is testing. A **smart** material must make a **reversible**, stimulus-triggered change - take the heat or light away and it goes back. A **composite** responds to **nothing**; it is simply a combination of materials chosen for better strength or lower weight. And **"modern" on its own means nothing** - a material is not smart just because it is new. Keep these three ideas separate and the marks are yours.

Technical textiles are not about looks - they are engineered for a **function**. The name usually tells you the job: **Geo-textiles** stabilise soil under roads and railways; **agro-textiles** protect crops; **construction textiles** reinforce buildings; **protective textiles** like Kevlar stop bullets and flames; **sports textiles** wick sweat away; and **environmentally friendly textiles** break down safely - **Biopol** is a well-known trademarked biodegradable polymer. Same idea every time: a fabric built for a purpose.
