How a building comes together
A finished building is the result of three things coming together: a chosen STRUCTURAL FORM, many different OCCUPATIONS working together, and carefully coordinated RESOURCES. ⭐⭐ The STRUCTURAL FORM is the way the building carries its load. A CELLULAR structure uses load-bearing walls to divide the space into rooms. A FRAMED structure uses a frame of concrete or steel to carry the load, with the walls just filling in. A PORTAL FRAME gives a large clear span for a warehouse, and a modern TIMBER FRAME is quick to erect, often for housing. ⭐ A building needs many OCCUPATIONS. The CLIENT wants it and pays for it. PROFESSIONAL roles design and manage it: the architect, engineers and surveyors. CRAFT roles build it: bricklayers, joiners, electricians and plumbers. ⭐⭐ And it draws on RESOURCES that are interdependent: the supply chain, costing, plant, labour and materials. A delay or shortage in one affects the others, so they must be planned together. This module is forms, occupations and resources. Strong answers name the right form or occupation and say what it does, and treat resources as connected. ⭐⭐ MATCH THE FORM TO THE NEED. Say WHY a form suits the job: a portal frame for a wide clear span, a cellular structure where many separate rooms are wanted, a timber frame for quick housing. The form plus the reason earns the mark. ⭐ KNOW PROFESSIONAL FROM CRAFT. Professionals (architect, engineer, surveyor, managers) design and manage; craft workers (bricklayer, joiner, electrician, plumber) build. Placing an occupation in the right group shows understanding. ⭐⭐ SHOW RESOURCES ARE INTERDEPENDENT. Explain how a delay in materials or a shortage of labour holds up the whole programme, so the supply chain, costing and planning must work together. DO NOT DRIFT INTO MATERIALS OR OTHER UNITS. Materials, health and safety, and the drawing units each have their own module; here, keep the focus on forms, occupations and resources. ⚠️ A note on accuracy. Describe costs and quantities in general terms; do not invent figures for prices, wages or how long a job takes. Leave construction aside for a moment. Picture a large orchestra preparing a concert, and how many different specialists it takes to make one piece of music. ⭐ No single player does everything. The strings carry the melody, the brass add power, the woodwind add colour, the percussion keep the pulse.
