Structuring Your Personal Portfolio
Your portfolio does not have to be one connected project. That is a real freedom, and it is also the trap: a moderator still reads your work as a journey, so the thread you are not required to build is the one that gets you the top band.

What Component 1 actually is 📁
Your **Personal Portfolio** is Component 1: the body of work you build up over the course, on theme(s), project(s) or task(s) that your centre chooses. Your school sets the brief, not Pearson. Two things about it are structural rather than artistic, and they decide how you should organise everything: **It is marked as a whole**, not piece by piece. (Exactly how that marking and moderation works is a separate module - this one is about what you put in front of it.) **All four assessment objectives have to be covered explicitly.** Not implied, not "it is in there somewhere". Findable.
The words that describe a portfolio 🗂️
Five terms, and the middle two are the structural choice this module is about:
Two ways to build it, and both are allowed ⚖️
On this specification the work in your portfolio **may be separate in focus OR interconnected**. There is no single-sustained-project rule here - which is a real structural difference from AQA, whose 2027 reform requires one connected project. That means the shape is your decision.
What does the specification actually require? ❓
A classmate insists your portfolio has to be one connected project from start to finish. Are they right?
- No. Work may be separate in focus or interconnected, so the structure is yours to choose
- Yes. Every exam board requires one sustained project now
- No, the opposite: the pieces must be separate so you can show range
- Only your centre can decide, and you have no say at all
Where does a moderator find each AO?
- AO1
- AO2
- AO3
- AO4
- pages where sources are analysed and questioned, and ideas develop out of them
- trials of materials, techniques and processes, including the ones that did not work
- recording of observations and ideas as the work progresses, in images and in words
- a final outcome that answers the intentions the earlier work set up

Which show EXPLICIT coverage? ✅
Select the TWO portfolio pages a moderator could credit without having to guess.
- A page of an artist's work with your written notes questioning how they use scale, and a sketch trying that idea out
- A sheet of four material trials, each labelled with what you were testing and what you concluded
- A page of images of an artist's work, neatly mounted, with the artist's name underneath
- A strong final piece presented on its own at the back of the portfolio
The thread nobody is making you build 🧵
Here is the part worth stopping on, because it looks like a contradiction and is not. **The specification does not require one connected project.** You may work in separate units, and a portfolio built that way is entirely legitimate. **But a moderator still reads strong work as a journey.** The AO1-to-AO4 narrative - source, experiment, record, resolve - is how good portfolios get read, whether or not a single project was ever required. **So the smart response to the freedom is not to abandon structure, it is to choose where to put it.** If your units are separate, give each one its own visible journey. If they are interconnected, the thread is already the structure and your job is to build range into it instead. Either way, the thing that is not compulsory is the thing that lifts the band.

Say it back 📝
My Personal Portfolio is Component 1, and the theme is set by my _____. The work in it may be separate in focus or _____, because this specification sets no single-sustained-project rule. All four assessment objectives must be covered _____, so a reader can find each one rather than assume it. The portfolio is marked as a _____. And although no thread is required, I will build one anyway, because strong work is read as a _____.
