Picture a newly finished house. Walls up, roof on, windows in, doors hung. From the pavement it looks complete. Now move in. ⚠️ THERE IS NO WATER. NO ELECTRICITY. NOTHING TO CARRY THE WASTE AWAY. NO HEATING. You have a weatherproof box, and nobody could live in it. So what is actually missing? Not structure. The missing part is everything the building needs in order to be CONNECTED to the world around it. ⚠️ AND THAT IS WHY YOUR SPECIFICATION PUTS THREE THINGS THAT LOOK UNRELATED IN ONE TOPIC. BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES: the shell. Walls, floors, openings, and the things that hold it all up. INFRASTRUCTURE: the networks outside. Roads and railways, water supply and sewerage, electrical grids, telecommunications. None of it is in your house and your house would be useless without it. BUILDING SERVICES: the junction between the two. ⚠️ THAT LAST ONE IS THE IDEA WORTH CARRYING. EVERY SERVICE INSIDE A BUILDING IS THE POINT WHERE A NATIONAL NETWORK MEETS A ROOM. A tap is the end of a water supply network that may begin in a reservoir thirty miles away. A socket is the end of an electrical grid. A drain is the START of the sewerage system. The radiator, the light switch, the broadband socket, the smoke alarm: every one of them is a joint between something enormous and something domestic. Once you see services that way, they stop being a list of components to memorise. ⚠️ YOU CAN PLACE ONE YOU HAVE NEVER MET BY ASKING TWO QUESTIONS: WHAT DOES IT MOVE, AND WHICH WAY?

Finished, and unusable
A block of flats is structurally complete: walls, floors, roof and windows are all finished and sound. Nobody can move in. What is the most likely explanation in the terms of this topic?

How to place something you have never seen
This sector contains thousands of components and no course could name them all. What a good answer needs is not a longer list but a reliable way of placing a thing you have not met. ⚠️ ASK TWO QUESTIONS. WHAT DOES IT MOVE, AND WHICH WAY? If it moves air, or it moves people, it is MECHANICAL. Heating and ventilation move air; lifts and escalators move people. Those look unrelated until you notice both are shifting something physical around inside the building. If it moves energy or information, it is ELECTRICAL. Power and lighting are the obvious half. ⚠️ THE LESS OBVIOUS HALF IS EVERYTHING THAT CARRIES A SIGNAL: communications, fire detection, security and alarm systems. A smoke detector is electrical services, and students who think of that branch as only sockets and lights get it wrong. If it moves water, it is PUBLIC-HEALTH, and the direction matters. Clean water arriving is supply; used water leaving is drainage; rain leaving is stormwater. ⚠️ THE WHOLE BRANCH EXISTS TO KEEP CLEAN AND DIRTY WATER APART, which is where the name comes from. And if it serves many buildings rather than one, it is INFRASTRUCTURE, whatever it moves. The pipe under the street is infrastructure; the pipe in your wall is a service. Same water, different side of the junction. Two things worth doing in an answer. ⚠️ SAY WHICH SIDE OF THE JUNCTION YOU ARE ON. Naming something as a service rather than infrastructure, and saying why, shows you understand the boundary rather than the label. And give the reason, not just the category. "A lift is mechanical services" is a classification. "A lift is mechanical services because that branch covers moving people and air within a building" is an explanation, and it is the version that survives being asked about something unfamiliar.
One house, five junctions
Stand in an ordinary kitchen and count the joints between something enormous and something domestic. THE TAP. Turn it and water arrives. That water was collected somewhere, treated somewhere else, and pushed through mains under every street between there and here. The tap is the last few centimetres of a network that may be thirty miles long. ⚠️ THE PIPE IN THE WALL IS A SERVICE; THE MAIN UNDER THE ROAD IS INFRASTRUCTURE. The junction is at the boundary of the property. THE PLUGHOLE. The same water leaves, and from here it is somebody else's problem to move and clean. The drain is not the end of anything. It is the START of the sewerage network, which is why the same branch of services handles both directions. THE SOCKET. Behind it, a circuit; behind that, a consumer unit; behind that, a cable to the street, a substation, and a grid spanning the country. The socket is where a national system becomes a kettle. THE BOILER AND RADIATORS. Energy arrives as gas or electricity, and this system turns it into moved heat, distributing warmth room by room. ⚠️ NOTICE IT SPANS TWO BRANCHES: THE FUEL IS DELIVERED BY ONE KIND OF NETWORK AND THE MOVING OF WARM AIR AND WATER IS MECHANICAL SERVICES. Real buildings do not respect tidy categories, and saying so in an answer is a strength rather than a hedge. THE BROADBAND SOCKET AND THE SMOKE ALARM. Both carry signals rather than power. One connects to a telecommunications network outside; the other to a panel inside. ⚠️ BOTH ARE ELECTRICAL SERVICES, BECAUSE THAT BRANCH IS ABOUT ENERGY AND INFORMATION, and information counts. ⚠️ FIVE JUNCTIONS IN ONE ROOM, AND NOT ONE OF THEM IS PART OF THE STRUCTURE. The walls hold the roof up. Everything that makes the room worth standing in is a connection to something outside it.
Order the journey of water through a house

- A hospital has a system of pipes carrying rainwater from the roof to a soakaway in the grounds. A student calls it infrastructure. Are they right?
- An office installs a network of cameras and door-entry readers linked to a control room. Which branch is this, and how can you tell?
- Asked to classify a gas-fired heating system, a student writes that it does not fit neatly into one branch. Is that a weakness in their answer?
Explain what makes a building usable
A friend thinks construction is about walls and roofs, and cannot see why anyone would study pipes and wiring as a subject. Write them an explanation, using a building you know well.
