Running your design project

The design and manufacturing project is worth half of the whole course, so knowing how to run it well matters more than almost anything else. This module works through the project from start to finish: - The portfolio: analysing the brief, research, the specification, ideas and planning.\n- The making: turning a design into a quality prototype, safely.\n- Testing and evaluating: judging the outcome against the requirements.\n- Evidence: recording every stage so the thinking is visible. The design-process theory and the drawing and systems content are covered in other modules. Here the focus is running and documenting the assessed project.

Making safely and to quality

The making stage is where a design becomes real, and it is judged on both safety and quality of finish. Choose the right tools and materials for the job, and follow your plan in a sensible order. Work safely at all times: wear the correct protection, keep guards in place on machines, and ask for help rather than rushing something that feels unsafe. As you go, check your work against the design, measuring and adjusting so the prototype is accurate and well finished. A careful maker produces a product that both works and looks the part.
