The ground feels solid and still, but the outer shell of the Earth is broken into huge pieces that are slowly moving all the time. These pieces float on a hot, slowly churning layer of rock below, drifting no faster than your fingernails grow, yet over millions of years they have rearranged whole continents. Most of the time we notice nothing. But where two of these pieces meet, the strain can be released suddenly and violently, and that is where the great natural hazards of the ground are found: shaking that flattens buildings, and molten rock that bursts to the surface. A cracked eggshell
To picture the outside of the Earth, think of a hard-boiled egg that has been rolled on the table so the shell is cracked all over. The shell is no longer one smooth piece: it is broken into many curved plates that still fit neatly together, sitting on the soft, slippery layer just beneath. Press gently and the cracked pieces can slide and grind against one another along the cracks. The Earth is like that egg. Its firm outer layer is split into great plates that rest on a softer layer below, and almost all the action happens along the cracks where those plates meet. Away from the cracks the shell is quiet; along them, pieces push, pull and scrape, and that is where the ground gives most of its trouble.
