Big effect in a small space
A short story, or stori fer in Welsh, does a great deal in very few pages. Unlike a novel, it is usually read in one sitting, follows only one or two characters, and turns on a single moment or effect. That tight focus is its strength: every word has to earn its place. To study one well you learn to notice its features, analyse how the writer creates an effect, and interpret what it means, supporting your ideas with evidence from the text. This module covers what a short story is, the elements to analyse, how it differs from the novel, and how to write about one.
Short story words
Learn these terms before analysing a story. They name the things you look for and write about.
Match each story term to its meaning
- short story
- character
- setting
- theme
- narrative viewpoint
- a short work of fiction read in one sitting
- a person who takes part in the story
- the time and place of the story
- the big idea the story explores
- who is telling the story
Short story against novel
A short story and a novel are both fiction, but they work differently, and knowing the difference helps you read each one well.
What makes a short story?
Compared with a novel, what is a defining feature of a short story?
- It is short and tightly focused on one main effect
- It is longer than a novel
- It always has dozens of main characters
- It has no plot or characters at all
Reading a story for effect
Reading a short story well means asking not just what happens but how the writer makes you feel it. Notice the character and what they want, the setting and the mood it creates, and the single moment the story turns on. Then ask how the writer builds the effect: through the viewpoint chosen, the details included or left out, and the shape of the ending. When you write about it, make a point about the effect, quote or refer to the evidence, name the method, and explain how it works on the reader. Point, evidence, method, effect: that pattern turns retelling into real analysis.
Pick what to analyse
Select everything worth analysing when you study a short story.
- How the characters are presented
- How the setting creates mood
- How the story is structured and ends
- How much the book cost
- How heavy the book is
Order how to write about a story
Put the steps of writing a strong response to a short story in the best order.
- Read the story closely
- Note the key features and moments
- Analyse how the writer creates an effect
- Interpret the theme or meaning
- Support each point with evidence
Complete the short story facts
A short work of fiction read in one sitting is a _____ story. A person in the story is a _____. The time and place of the story is the _____. The big idea a story explores is its _____.
One short story, read closely
Imagine a short story in which an old man walks to the sea at dawn to scatter a handful of soil from a garden he has had to leave. There is only one character and one quiet moment, yet a great deal is packed in. The setting, the empty beach at first light, creates a lonely, tender mood. The single action, scattering the soil, carries the theme of loss and letting go. The writer tells it from close beside the man, so we feel his grief without being told to. And the story ends on the image of the soil vanishing into the water, a final effect that lingers. Notice how one moment, carefully shaped, does the work of a whole chapter. That concentration is the art of the short story.
