What you'll cover

Ways to train

There is no single best way to train. Each named method suits a different goal: some build up stamina, some build power, and some improve flexibility. A good athlete picks the training type that develops the fitness their sport needs. This module works through the named training types and what each one is for.

Training methods

Learn these four training methods before you study the rest.

Continuous vs interval

Two common methods build stamina in very different ways.

Match the type to the goal

A top answer chooses the training type by the fitness the sport needs, and explains why. Note one detail examiners like: weight training can build strength with heavy weights and few repetitions, or muscular endurance with lighter weights and many repetitions.

Match the method

  • interval training
  • HIIT
  • weight training
  • circuit training
  • hard bursts split by rest periods
  • very intense short bursts of effort
  • lifting weights against a resistance
  • moving round stations of exercises

Match what it builds

  • interval training
  • weight training
  • circuit training
  • static stretching
  • builds speed and anaerobic power
  • builds strength or muscular endurance
  • works many components of fitness
  • improves flexibility

Best for flexibility

A gymnast wants to improve how far they can stretch. Which training type is best?

  • Static stretching.
  • Weight training.
  • Plyometric training.
  • Interval training.

Spot the hard bursts

Select the TWO training types that use short bursts of very hard effort.

  • Interval training.
  • HIIT.
  • Continuous training.
  • Static stretching.

A training session

Put the parts of a training session in order, earliest first.

  • Warm up with gentle exercise
  • Do the main training, such as intervals
  • Cool down with light activity
  • Finish with some stretching

Name the training

A marathon runner jogging steadily does _____ training. A sprinter doing repeated fast runs with rest does _____ training. Explosive jumps to build power are _____ training. Holding a stretch to improve flexibility is _____ stretching. Moving round exercise stations is _____ training.

continuous interval plyometric static circuit Fartlek weight HIIT aerobic power

Reach the minimum

Continuous training should last at least 20 minutes. An athlete has trained for 12 minutes so far. Subtract 12 from 20 to find the extra minutes still needed. What is the answer in minutes?

Find the intense methods

Tap the TWO training types that use short, high-intensity bursts.

  • interval training
  • HIIT
  • continuous training
  • static stretching

Choose the training

Read each athlete goal and choose the best training type.

  • A marathon runner wants to build up cardiovascular endurance
  • A high jumper wants more explosive power in the legs
  • A gymnast wants to improve how far they can bend and reach

Plan the training

Choose a sport. Recommend two training types for an athlete in that sport and explain what each one develops.

  • Name the sport and what fitness the athlete needs
  • Recommend one training type and what it develops
  • Recommend a second training type and what it develops
