Travel and Tourist Transactions

Na bilheteira
A transaction abroad is short and predictable: say what you want, ask what it costs, and find out where to go. That last one hides a problem. English asks "where is it?" about a railway station and about a lost ticket in exactly the same words. Portuguese uses two different verbs, and choosing the wrong one is the giveaway that you are translating from English.
Palavras úteis

- o dinheiro
- a chave
- a loja
- the ticket
- the money
- the key

Fica ou está?
Portuguese asks "where is it?" in two different ways, and the test is simple: can the thing move? Note also that o quarto is a room, not a quarter, which is a trap worth remembering before you book anything.
Qual é?
You are lost and want to ask where the station is. What do you say?
- Onde fica a estação?
- Onde está a estação?
- Onde é a estação?
- Onde tem a estação?
Completa as frases
Onde _____ a loja? O meu bilhete _____ na mala. As duas estações _____ perto do centro.

Three expressions finish the transaction:
Põe em ordem
Put a short exchange at the ticket office into a sensible order.
- Open politely: Bom dia, por favor
- Say what you want: queria um bilhete para Lisboa
- Ask the price: quanto custa?
- Hand over o dinheiro

- A loja fica ao lado do hotel.
- A chave está na receção.
- A estação está perto do centro.
- O meu bilhete fica na mala.
Na estação
You are at the station and then at your hotel. Choose the right Portuguese each time.

- You cannot find the platform and want to ask where the train is. The train is at the platform, waiting. What do you ask?
- At the hotel you want to ask where your room is. What do you ask?
