Writing travel sentences in French
Translating a travel sentence into French means getting the past tense right, and travel talk is mostly three verbs: leaving, staying and coming back. These verbs form the past with etre, so the ending has to agree with who did it. This module practises turning English travel sentences into correct French, one check at a time.
The four checks
Learn the four things you check on every travel sentence.
Etre and agreement
Two things decide the marks on a travel sentence.
Run the four checks
Before you write a travel sentence in the past, run four checks. Is the helper verb etre and not avoir. Does the ending agree with who did it. Is the preposition right: en for a country, a for a town, dans les for a named mountain range. And do the words mean what you think. Get those four right and the sentence is right.
