Where the material is, and what wears it

This topic asks you to learn where the UK's landscapes are, and then spends the rest of its length on how particular landforms are made. Those look like two unrelated jobs. They are not. ⚠️ DISTRIBUTION TELLS YOU WHERE THE RAW MATERIAL IS. THE FIVE GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES ARE EVERYTHING THAT IS SUBSEQUENTLY DONE TO IT. Every landform you will meet later - every waterfall, every spit, every meander - is some combination of FIVE processes acting on ONE of three kinds of place. That is worth knowing now for a practical reason. You can learn those five processes once, here, and carry them into the river and coastal work. Or you can learn them again separately for each landform, which is what most people end up doing. ⚠️ And there is one thing about this specification you could not work out for yourself, so it is set out at step 9. It concerns glaciated landscapes, and it changes what you need to revise. It is not that they do not matter. It is that what you are asked about them is narrower than you would expect. The module runs in that order: the five processes, then the three kinds of place, then what OCR does and does not ask.

The five geomorphic processes

Three kinds of place, three parts of the country

The conventional divide is the Tees-Exe line, running from the Tees in the north-east to the Exe in the south-west. Uplands lie broadly to its north and west, lowlands to its south and east.

Broken in place, or carried away

Water gets into a crack in a cliff, freezes, expands, and over many winters the rock splits apart. The fragments stay exactly where they fell. A student calls this erosion. What is the correct term, and why?

  • Weathering, because the rock has been broken down where it stands and nothing has carried it away. Erosion requires removal by a moving agent
  • Erosion is right, since the cliff has clearly been worn away
  • Mass movement, because gravity was involved in the fragments falling
  • Transport, because the water moved into the crack

How to use the toolkit on any landform

The two topics after this one ask how particular landforms are made. They look like a long list of things to memorise. They are the same five processes, in different orders, on different material. ⚠️ SO WHEN YOU MEET A NEW LANDFORM, ASK FOUR QUESTIONS IN THIS ORDER. ONE: what was the material to begin with? Hard rock or soft, resistant or yielding? The starting material decides what the rest can do. TWO: what broke it down, and did anything move? This separates breakdown in place from removal by a moving agent, and getting that wrong is the commonest single error on this topic. THREE: what carried the material, and how far? Naming the agent matters: water, ice and wind do not behave alike. FOUR: where did it stop, and why? ⚠️ Material is dropped when the thing carrying it loses energy, so the answer to "why here" is almost always "because something slowed down". Write a landform answer as a CHAIN, with each step causing the next, and the specification's own grade 9 note asks for exactly that. A list of processes in any order is a list; a chain is an explanation. ⚠️ And name the agent every time. "It was eroded" tells a marker nothing about what did the eroding.

The process that is not on the list

Look back at the five processes. Weathering, mass movement, erosion, transport, deposition. Now notice what is missing. ⚠️ THERE IS NO GLACIAL PROCESS ON THAT LIST, AND THAT IS NOT AN OVERSIGHT. This specification treats glaciated landscapes as an OVERVIEW ONLY. You are expected to know that they exist and where in the UK they are found. You are not asked how ice made any particular landform, and glaciated landscapes are never one of the case studies you can be set. Compare that with rivers and coasts, which get a compulsory case study each, a full set of landforms and a management question. ⚠️ So the revision decision follows directly. Learn where the glaciated landscapes are and that ice, not present-day rivers, shaped them. Do not spend an evening learning how a corrie forms, because on this specification you cannot be asked. And notice what this tells you about the five processes. They are not a general list of everything that shapes land. They are the list of what YOU will be expected to explain, which is why they are worth learning properly rather than skimming. ⚠️ One caution. Other boards structure this content differently, so a revision guide or a video written for a different specification may take you a long way past what OCR asks. Check whose syllabus you are being taught from.

Order what happens to a piece of rock

  • Water freezes in a crack and the rock is broken apart where it stands
  • The loosened fragment travels down the slope under gravity
  • A river picks the fragment up and wears away the bed as it does so
  • The fragment is carried downstream, becoming rounder and smaller on the way
  • The river slows down and the fragment is dropped
