What you'll cover

Reading Gujarati 🪔

Gujarati has its own graceful script, written from **left to right** (like English) but with **no capital letters**. In this module every word is shown three ways: the **script**, the **sound** (transliteration in brackets), and the **English**, so you learn to recognise it and say it.

Saying who you are 🙋

Two words to introduce yourself: - **હું (hu)** = I - **મારું નામ (maru nam)** = my name So મારું નામ... (maru nam...) begins "my name is...".

The family 👨‍👩‍👧

The core family and friends words: - **પિતા (pita)** = father, **માતા (mata)** = mother - **ભાઈ (bhai)** = brother, **બહેન (bahen)** = sister - **કુટુંબ (kutumb)** = family, **મિત્ર (mitra)** = friend

Match each Gujarati word to its meaning

  • હું (hu)
  • મારું નામ (maru nam)
  • કુટુંબ (kutumb)
  • પિતા (pita)
  • મિત્ર (mitra)

How the writing works 🔤

Gujarati is written **left to right**, like English, but it has **no capital letters**. It is an **abugida**: each consonant carries a built-in vowel sound, and small marks (called matras) change that vowel. So the letters and the vowel-signs work together.
