What you'll cover

Reading Persian

Persian is written in a flowing script, read from right to left (the opposite of English), and it has no capital letters. The letters join up into cursive words. In this module every word is shown three ways: the script, the sound (transliteration in brackets), and the English, so you learn to recognise it and say it.

Saying who you are

These are useful starting chunks for introducing yourself. Read the Persian first, then use the transliteration as a support.

The core family and friends words from the identity topic.

Match each Persian word to its meaning

  • من (man)
  • اسم (esm)
  • خانواده (khanevadeh)
  • پدر (pedar)
  • دوست (dust)
  • I

  • father
  • friend

How the writing works

Persian uses the Perso-Arabic script, read from right to left, and the letters join up into cursive words. There are no capital letters. Persian adds four letters of its own for sounds Arabic does not have: پ گ چ ژ (p, g, ch, zh).

True of Persian?

Which statement about Persian writing is correct?

  • It is written right to left and the letters join up

Select ALL THREE words that are family members.

  • پدر (pedar)
  • مادر (madar)
  • برادر (baradar)
  • دوست (dust)
  • من (man)
  • اسم (esm)

Introduce yourself

Choose the right word at each step to introduce yourself and your family.

  • To say "I", which word do you use?

  • To talk about your sister, which word?

One more word

Which word means "friend"?

  • دوست (dust)
  • خانواده (khanevadeh)
  • پدر (pedar)
  • من (man)

The right word

Using the script, complete: "father" is _____, "mother" is _____, "brother" is _____, and "friend" is _____.

پدر (pedar) مادر (madar) برادر (baradar) دوست (dust) خواهر (khahar) من (man) خانواده (khanevadeh) اسم (esm)

Write a tiny profile

Write two short Persian lines using only patterns from this module.
