Edexcel GCSE Astronomy revision for teachers

These activities are mapped to Edexcel GCSE Astronomy 1AS0, the only GCSE Astronomy specification in our curriculum data, so there is no board decision to make before using them. The thing worth knowing before you plan revision is how the course relates to physics. Astronomy is one topic inside a GCSE Physics specification, one of eight with AQA and one of fifteen with Edexcel. As a subject of its own it becomes sixteen. The later topics have a physics counterpart, so revision habits carry over. The earlier ones largely do not: the equation of time, longitude by chronometer, libration, precession and celestial coordinates appear nowhere else on a GCSE timetable, and there is no other subject reinforcing them during the week.

This page lists what we actually have for Edexcel GCSE Astronomy 1AS0. It is built from the live activities, so it is accurate on the day you read it.

One physics topic, expanded into sixteen

Every other board and subject page on this site sits next to a rival board's version of the same course. This one does not. Astronomy is the only subject in our curriculum data with a single specification, so the usual first question, which board, does not arise.

The comparison that does matter is with physics. A GCSE Physics specification carries astronomy as one topic among eight or fifteen, depending on the board. Edexcel names it Astronomy and puts it in Paper 1. AQA calls it Space physics. Either way it is one topic, and here the same subject is sixteen topics with nothing beneath them, eight in Paper 1 and eight in Paper 2.

That flat structure is useful in itself. There is no hierarchy to navigate and no topic large enough to need breaking down, so each of the sixteen is already about the size of one revision session.

The half physics revision reaches

The Paper 2 topics are the ones a physics teacher will recognise. Planetary motion and gravity, stellar evolution, and redshift and the Big Bang all have a counterpart in a physics course, and a student who has revised those for physics is not starting from nothing.

If you teach both, this is where to lean on what you already do. It is also where students taking both subjects get the most out of revising once.

The half it does not

The Paper 1 topics are a different matter. Astronomical time and the equation of time. Finding longitude by shadow, sundial and chronometer. The lunar disc, libration and precession. Celestial and horizon coordinate systems. Early models of the Solar System.

None of that appears in any other GCSE. No other subject on a student's timetable touches it during the week, and there is no incidental reinforcement from anywhere else.

The practical consequence is about spacing rather than content. In most subjects a topic gets revisited by accident: a related lesson, an overlapping subject, a question in something else. Here the Paper 1 material only comes back if somebody deliberately brings it back. If you are planning a revision cycle for this course, weight it towards the first eight topics, not because they are harder but because nothing else is keeping them alive.

What the activities ask students to do

Every one is between fifteen and twenty minutes, which is a narrower range than any other subject here. There is no long activity and no five minute one.

Eleven of the twenty-two ask the student both to work out a value and to set out an explanation in the same activity. That follows a subject that keeps putting the two together: work out an altitude, then say why it changes with the seasons.

Finding the right one

The lists below group by classroom use, worked out from what each activity contains. Homework is not a heading, because all twenty-two suit it and a heading holding everything separates nothing.

Independent study is the largest real grouping, at seventeen of the twenty-two. That fits a course where the material is unlike anything else a student is studying and repetition has to be deliberate. Using them

What this page does not do

It is one pass, not a bank. Ten of the sixteen topics have a single activity behind them, so a student who works through it once has used most of what is here.

It cannot help with observing. Two topics are about observation and the activities cover the knowledge in them, but nothing on a screen substitutes for finding something in a real sky.

It does not track anything, so there is no completion list to check.

Common questions

Is there more than one GCSE Astronomy specification?

No. Edexcel 1AS0 is the only one in our curriculum data, and Astronomy is the only subject on this site with a single specification. Every other subject page has a rival board's page beside it. This one does not, so there is nothing to check before you use it.

Will GCSE Physics revision cover any of it?

Some of the second half. Planetary motion and gravity, stellar evolution, and redshift and the Big Bang all have a counterpart in a physics course. The first half mostly does not, because a physics specification carries nothing on the equation of time, longitude, libration, precession or celestial coordinates.

How is the course divided?

Sixteen topics with no subtopics beneath them, eight in Paper 1 and eight in Paper 2. It is a flat list rather than a hierarchy, so each topic is already small enough to be one revision session.

How many activities are there per topic?

Twenty-two across the sixteen topics. Six topics have two and ten have one, so treat this as one pass over the course rather than a bank you can keep drawing on.

Can it help with observing the sky?

Only with the knowledge. Two topics are about observation, and the activities cover what is in them: what is visible, how coordinates work, what to expect from the Sun and planets. A screen cannot teach a student to find something in a real sky, so if your course asks for observations, that part is not something we can do for you.

Will I see who has completed them?

No. Following a shared link records nothing about who followed it, which is a deliberate choice about children's data.
