This page lists what we actually have for CCEA GCSE Engineering and Manufacturing 0009. It is built from the live activities, so it is accurate on the day you read it.
The numbers, which is where this subject separates
Engineering vocabulary is learnable in an afternoon. A student can be taught that ductility means a material draws into a wire and tensile strength means it resists being pulled, and sound knowledgeable by Friday.
The quantitative half is different, and it is where candidates actually diverge. Seven of these eight activities contain a question where the student types a value rather than choosing one.
Material properties, stress-strain and Young's modulus is the important one. It takes the descriptive vocabulary through an actual test to a number that means something, which is the transition the whole subject rests on. A class that can name properties and cannot compute a modulus has learned the labels and not the discipline.
Manufacturing costs does the same for the commercial half: direct and indirect costs, and how they combine into a total that determines whether a product is viable. Students routinely treat cost as a single number.
Reading engineering drawings and tolerances is the third. Tolerance is the concept most reliably half-understood in this subject, because it is easy to state and hard to apply, and every dimension on a drawing depends on it.
What is missing, and it is not a small one
The specification has eight content areas. Seven have an activity here. New and emerging technologies has none.
That is an unfortunate one to be short of. It is examinable, it is the area that changes fastest, and it is the part of the course students will read about voluntarily, which makes it the easiest thing to set as independent work if there were anything to set.
Until there is, that area needs your own material or CCEA's own papers, which are in our past paper archive, free and unaltered.
The rest
The design process covers the sequence from brief to evaluation. Production methods covers one-off, batch and mass and the conditions each suits. The CCEA vocational suite
This is one of several CCEA subjects with almost no commercial revision material behind it. The closest neighbour is CCEA GCSE Construction and the Built Environment, which shares the drawing and materials ground from the built-environment side.
