CCEA GCSE Engineering and Manufacturing revision

These activities are mapped to CCEA GCSE Engineering and Manufacturing 0009. Eight of them, seventeen to twenty-two minutes each. **This is the most quantitative of the CCEA vocational sets on this site.** Seven of the eight activities contain a question where the student types a number: stress and strain, Young's modulus, direct against indirect costs, total cost, and tolerances. Engineering is a subject where the vocabulary is easy and the numbers are where candidates separate, and this set goes at the numbers. One topic is missing. **New and emerging technologies has no activity**, which is both examinable and the part of the course students are most willing to read about. That gap is named here rather than left to be found.

The numbers, which is where this subject separates

Engineering vocabulary is learnable in an afternoon. A student can be taught that ductility means a material draws into a wire and tensile strength means it resists being pulled, and sound knowledgeable by Friday.

The quantitative half is different, and it is where candidates actually diverge. Seven of these eight activities contain a question where the student types a value rather than choosing one.

Material properties, stress-strain and Young's modulus is the important one. It takes the descriptive vocabulary through an actual test to a number that means something, which is the transition the whole subject rests on. A class that can name properties and cannot compute a modulus has learned the labels and not the discipline.

Manufacturing costs does the same for the commercial half: direct and indirect costs, and how they combine into a total that determines whether a product is viable. Students routinely treat cost as a single number.

Reading engineering drawings and tolerances is the third. Tolerance is the concept most reliably half-understood in this subject, because it is easy to state and hard to apply, and every dimension on a drawing depends on it.

What is missing, and it is not a small one

The specification has eight content areas. Seven have an activity here. New and emerging technologies has none.

That is an unfortunate one to be short of. It is examinable, it is the area that changes fastest, and it is the part of the course students will read about voluntarily, which makes it the easiest thing to set as independent work if there were anything to set.

Until there is, that area needs your own material or CCEA's own papers, which are in our past paper archive, free and unaltered.

The rest

The CCEA vocational suite

This is one of several CCEA subjects with almost no commercial revision material behind it. The closest neighbour is CCEA GCSE Construction and the Built Environment, which shares the drawing and materials ground from the built-environment side.

One topic: new and emerging technologies. Seven of the specification's eight areas have an activity and that one does not, which is awkward because it is both examinable and the part students find most interesting.

Do the activities involve real calculation?

More than most vocational sets here. Seven of the eight contain a typed-number question, covering stress and strain, Young's modulus, direct and indirect costs, total cost, and tolerances.

What is the stress-strain activity like?

It takes material properties through testing to Young's modulus, which is the point where this subject stops being descriptive and starts being quantitative. It is the activity most worth setting for a class that can name properties and cannot use them.

Are drawings covered?

Two activities: engineering drawing and CAD, and reading engineering drawings with tolerances. Tolerance is the concept students most reliably half-understand.

How long are they?

Seventeen to twenty-two minutes, eight in total.

Will I see who has completed them?

No. Following a shared link records nothing about who followed it, which is a deliberate choice about children's data.
